I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion about bats and climate change. Thus, climate change belongs to the major threats and challenges to global bat conservation through increased temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, more droughts and heat waves as well as stronger and more intense hurricanes.

Climate change particularly due to increasing temperature has impact of humans as well as animals including bats.We have published a review article on Climate change.

Hey Yann, there is currently a working group in Europe working to understand the impact of climate change on European bats (https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA18107/%3Ca%20href=/223824/167608/197840/197111/#tabs|Name:overview). I have actually recently contacted Orly in order to know if I could contribute to the group. They are currently holding multiple meetings in order to discuss this subject. I think the first one was in Sintra - Portugal.

Changes in temperature are associated with global climate change. Rising temperature has changed the habits and distribution of many animals including bat species. Bats are relevant indicators of climate change. Climate change is prompting the bats to change their behavior. The range of many bat species are restricted by the bat's ability to tolerate temperature. Due to global climate change mortality in bats is likely to occur. In some regions bats have been documented at higher elevations than normal. Feeding of vampire bats is limited by low temperature as it cannot consume blood when the ambient temperature falls below 10 degrees centigrade. However, they can also adapt to climate change through flexibility of their behavior and flexibility in the methods they use to maintain their internal body temperature.

Changes in climate esp. the rising temperatures can cause physiological and anatomical structures damages: eps. to organisms that have a thin skin and or any other sensitive parts in the body that are exposed to the sun radiation.
In Bats esp. in those that they are active during the day light the skin is a major organ that that they use for flying they don't have feathers and wings and they use their skin for fly - the skin is stretched skin that connect between their body to their limbs.
This skin might get heated by the sun radiation and without cooling it will cause damages in the long term.
An interesting point is the land use change , which causes pressure on habitats, changes in diet and food availability for bats.

Some ongoing projections in Neotropical area are showing the expansion and spread of habitat generalists, which forage in open areas and commonly establish large colonies in manmade structures, coupled with range contraction of habitat specialists will homogenise bat communities. Also, warm-adapted species might expand their ranges towards higher altitudes, while mountain-top specialists will run out of suitable climate.
