Hi everyone,
May I request you for your advice in shaping the background section of a research paper? Literature is quite sporadic on it but I am sure there would be some Must Haves.
Please share your advice and enlighten everyone.

It depends what type of study are you writing for. In your case it's an observational study like cross-sectional, start with the magnitude of the problem, prevalence, what previous literature observed, what is needed in current literature and justify your objectives. Convince the readers your rationale!
It will also depend whether it is part of dissertation/ thesis or paper in biomedical journal. In former, detailed description of all relevant studies or reports may be written while in paper usually recent articles are better to cite. I agree with former answers. Describing the topic and requirement of your research question and what it adds to contemporary knowledge is key ingredient. The whole background should narrow down to this question.
It not only depends on the type of research or study your are doing it also depends on the requirements of the journal
