Hi Khurram - Peter's response offers very useful advice. I would add to it to look to examples in your discipline of titles that work and don't work for your. For instance, early in my publication career I was out to 'impress' readers and was over-pedantic - and what Peter accurately describes as jargon. For instance, one of my articles was titled "Naturalistic v’s reductionistic approaches to health-related practice: opposing dichotomy or symbiotic partnership?" Looking at it now - it wouldn't grab a readers attention and doesn't really mean anything. My message today is to keep titles as direct and as straight-forward as possible - and as short as possible. There are frameworks that can be used to direct. For instance, in experimental clinical research one can use the PICO format (population, intervention, comparator, outcome). For primary studies, I would always recommend including the methodology somewhere in the title. I agree with Peter's comment, as well, about avoiding 'cute' titles. They are usually 'forced'. That said, I wouldn't deter 'catchy' titles - as long as they accurately describe the content and are not forced just for the sake of it. For instance, another earlier title of a journal article of mine is "How effective are health education programmes: resistance, reactance, rationality and risk? Recommendations for effective practice." All the 'Rs' mentioned are an integral part of the article - and are catchy because they 'roll off the tongue' - at least in my mind they do. 

Remember that, while titles are important, accurate keywords are just as important. They are the main direct link to reader searches using keywords.

I think you should consider the following point before choosing your title

1- Clear wording of the title

2- The title should describe the problem and dimensions of the study

3- The title uses new terms that are not used before.

4- The entire research covers all the terms of the title

5- To be understood by specialists

Some really good advice for choosing a topic and a title. I completely agree that the title should exactly describe the topic and include the keywords that you might use to search for a paper or theses that is similar to yours.  Remember that most people who look for your topic won't know you, but will use the internet or Library Catalogues or databases.  SEO's also advise putting key words in the title and abstract (also important in searching).  The caveat might be the discipline you are in.  In the social sciences and the humanities, the title might be ironic or a quotation usually followed by an explanatory subtitle.  Good luck with your studies. To make a research papers has a sequence of different steps. In the very beginning should be the broad interest of the researcher. What does he/she like to work on should be entirely based on disciplinary background (a Geography researcher should not do a Chemistry research) and motivation to learn more. Once a broad direction has been set a phase of intensive reading should be done to become a master of the broad subject and in particular learn possible gaps that are there. In this process a researcher also learns what methods others have taken. Once this step is completed the researcher is well equipped to narrow down his/her work to a specific topic, to the point (the better thzis is done the easier the work later gets). This includes a title that highlights the major character of the resaearch. I think that the chance of being read by many and have high citations is not important, but I equally think that a title that gives a good idea what a paper is about will be read by many and get many citations.

Once a good title has been chosen, the reflection on the concrete aims and objectives of the research is done. These objectives, of course, arise from the deliberation about a good title. The last phase before field-work , or work in the lab starts, is the reflection on the information (data) needed to relate precisely to the objectives. Often research topics are not to the point, the objectives are blurry and to mainy and the data collected is far too many and not aligned to the objectives.

Once this has been done data collection can start.

Important for citations is the journal one publishes, as the scientific community, sometimes without justification, assumes that good quality papers appear only in top-notch journals, which is not always the case. Sometimes I come across excellent papers in lesser known journals and also highly reputed journals sometimes publish papers where I wonder why they are there.
