Dear RG members,

It is rare to find articles published by only one or two researchers anymore. I see more of 3-8 authors. There is a common belief that the first name on any article represent the original author of the research paper, some argue that the last name represent the original owner, others belief that the corresponding author is the original owner of a paper. I recently got information that in some journals, names of authors appear in alphabetical order. As for the authors in the middle, it is hard to tell or rate their level of participation.

My question is:

(i) How do I spot the original author of any article with multiple authors?

(ii) How best should authorship be assigned?

(ii) What should be the grading policy for articles published by more than one author?

(iii) Who receives the highest point during rating?

Your suggestions please.....
