Just to express amazement over a paper authored by so many people. I know it happens, but does it really make sense to give research credit to 268 different researchers over a single paper?

I feel some ethical guideline is needed...

What about a guideline like the one proposed in : https://www.aje.com/arc/ethics-manuscript-authorship/

It requires participation of all authors at 4 levels:

Significant involvement in study conception/design, data collection, or data analysis/interpretation;

Involvement in drafting or revising manuscript;

Approval of final version of manuscript for publication; and

Responsibility for accuracy and integrity of all aspects of research.
