Dear colleagues,
we collcted this unknown Asteraceae in southern Kazakhstan west of Almaty in the Kaskelen valley in the Zailijskij Alatau Mts at about 1200 m a.s.l. . The habitat was steppe scrub. No fruits are preserved in the dry capitula, therefore the key in the flora is rather useless. But somebody with routine field experience in that area may help me...

Cirsium, arvense ha, come quasi tutti i Cirsium, le foglie con lamina profondamente incisa e spinose, solo C. pannonicum le ha intere e spinulose, ma per lo più ha un solo capolino; il C.anglicum, ha foglie intere e spinulose, ma abbraccianti il fusto e un solo capolino. Forse una Crepis o uno Hieracium?
Thanks a lot, Andrew. Cirsium arvense is an interesting suggestion, indeed. There are 19 species of Cirsium reported from Kazakhstan, among them Cirsium arvense, C. setosum and C. ochrolepidium, which are all closely related. However, our plant has a thick rhizom with fibrous remnants of leaves, which is something never found in C. arvense and its relatives. As far as Crepis and Hieracium are concerned, I believe that it is not a Cichorioideae species.
It may be some species of Jurinea. Something like Jurinea multiflora or Jurinea dumulosa.
Thanks. Arvindh. Jurinea multiflora was rather common in steppes, and I collected it several times. It looks very different: see, for instance, http://www.plantarium.ru/page/view/item/21438.html. It differs, among others, by narrow and convolute leaves, which are whitish tomentous below. Jurinea dumulosa does not occur in Kazakhstan according to their flora. There are almost 50 species of Jurinea in that country, and I checked most of the brief descriptions in the key and some photographs in the internet before posting the pictures on RG.
