I have selected a first generation of individuals from a few parental specimens of Quercus pubescens; they show red crowns in autumn as the parents do. This color seems to be unknown in Q. pubescens. I am looking for any information from anywhere about other individuals and/or groups of Q. pubescens with the same trait. Thank you.
Red like Q. rubra or like copper beech? Could you share a photograph?
I have never seen red Q. pubescens, but I seem to remember the related Q. robur in a reddisch variety. And of course Quercus species do bastardize within the genus.
In central Italy, where I was born, Quercus pubescens is very common, but the typical color of the leaves in the autumn is yellow and I have never seen red or reddish color. Please share a photo.

Interesting. The color is just like the one of the scarlet oak Quercus coccinea! I am curious to see if such a color will extend to most of the foliage within the end of November. If so, I believe that this plant has a great potential as an ornamental plant. But then it would be important to reproduce the clone via stem cutting. In your experience is that easy with Q. pubescens?
Thank you. I will wait for till the crowns are fully colored but I can already say that this behaviour has been shown for at least 20 years by the same individuals (I planted the seedlings in 1986-1987). At the moment, it seems still quite difficult to reproduce Q. pubescens via stem cutting - as some forest genecologists told me.
Do you have some acorns available? I would be plased to try to cultivate few plants. I add a couple of photos of my recent experience with a Japaneese red maple tree (Momiji).
Congratulations! The oak (F1) that I am growing do not produce acorns yet.
This year the parental specimens have not produced seeds ... I mean, the high mean temperature and severe soil aridity caused the premature fall of all the acorns.
Thank you for sharing your photos!! It is very nice color. I hope you will be able to propagate this plant in one way or another. I am convinced it would be a success for home gardens and municipal green areas.
