I am undergraduate, majoring in public finance, also enthusiastic about data science and analysis. I would like to do research with a researcher at my institution who is studying in the areas of optimization, simulation, modelling. Here are some of her projects. - Optimal production planning utilizing leftovers for an all-you-care-to-eat food service operation. - Achieving Sustainability beyond Zero Waste: A Case Study from a College Football Stadium My question is to be able to come up / find a topic to study together, something both of us can enjoy. Research is a collaborative project. So to take part, you have to find an appropriate role for yourself that will build on what is already known – add another piece to the jigsaw.
To do that, you must know the current state of knowledge and theory in the area. Reading any paper in the area you will probably find the authors discussing what we need to research next. My advice would be to pick a simple, practical study and replicate it with some modifications – different population, time period, measurement of variables etc. Learning to do research is like learning to cook. You learn a lot by following recipes, because to begin with your results will not look like the pretty picture in the book, and you will learn all the things that can go wrong, which journal authors never tell you about!
To add with Ronán Michael Conroy besides looking for state of the art in the relevant area, data analytics requires stable datasets. You can choose a certain area, you may have its relevant literature but you will end up having incomplete or having no datasets. Make sure the area you choose should have complete and labeled data set with ground truth, and serves the purpose you want to achieve.
You can search Google scholar with the key words you are interested in, and try to narrow research for recent papers in the past 5 years fir example, check the topics and select some topics to discuss them with your advisor.
