I never use a specific textbook for classes even if my students are first year undergraduates. Rather I prefer using differenet sources including textbooks, articles, chapters in edited books, etc. I usually recommend two main handbooks, but students are aware that they won't succeed in my exams if they rely only on them. The material of the class plus any other additional readings that students have to study are provided, as well (e.g., blackboard, e-class, moodle).
Depending on the course level when I teach a basic course I stick with one text, however, when I teach a higher level course I recommend various resources.
I used to work in a 'traditional university' , where I gave students a reading list . All of these books were placed on 'set text' for the university library, which meant that students could access them withou needing to buy them. As I led a multi-agency degree in child and adolescent mental health degree ( for teachers, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists) , it was imporant to have a range of these texts as well as articles to help students to critically analyse a range of perspectives.
However, I now work in a university specialising in distance learning and I have found this new pedagogy to be extrememly interesting and has many transferrable skills and techniques. It is possible to put course material on line for the students to access and to encourage the group discussion and critical analaysis via using a combination of on line tutorials and also face to face groups. As a lecturer, I feel this has helped me to develop, but more importantly, it has so many advantages for students in terms of access and flexibility.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the potential for distance learning.

Some times you need to sophisticate the subjects of undergraduate students by focusing on different text books and so many topics related ,this way can make the students concentrate their attention , and to be more enthusiastic to follow you .But you ought take in your consideration that you must reactive and show the same enthusiasm toward your students .This is the best way to let the students go for more search and for more study to analyze the materials ....
