I have studied in my own country and also had international fellowships to study abroad and found both experiences life changing in helping me to question my tacit taken for granted beliefs and understanding.. I have also taught in a traditional university and been invited to teach abroad and again have found both to be stimulating and opportunities to engage in reciprocal learning. However, I now work with the Open University, which is involved in 'distance learning' and uses technology to enable students from diverse settings, cultures and nationalities to study together. In an increasingly global society, I feel that this is essential to the future of education and also a means to breaking down not only educational barriers but also cultural and political barriers. I hope that international study flourishes both geographically and virtually. However, given the expense of study abroad, distance learning can be a real agent of democratisation for those with limited resources to study abroad
I think that to Study Abroad makes the difference, because it opens the mind and gives the opportunity to work inside a different country with different cultures.
Study Abroad is important also today even if we have acccess to several online contents and courses. Online Programs are great and give access to information and contents but presence abroad gives the opportunity to learn also some practical Skills. At Chef Academy Italy we teach also Practical Skills and the presence in Italy is a must. At the same time we also teach (this is my role) how the students should promote themselfes on Social Media to increase the Job Opportunities.
First it depends on the subject you want to study. In my case, it was not offered at home, so I had to go abroad. By studying in a different environment I gained a lot of exposure to the world meeting with people from all backgrounds and situations.
Even if you are at home, one is still not near one's own home. One needs to travel a bit but not too far away.
I can say with confidence that my decision to leave was a good one and don't regret it.
