Definitely love. If it's to be loved, both challenges and success can make you productive. Fearing maybe needed to carefully do tasks, meanwhile fear leads to 'impossibility sense' or some uncertainty on whether will succeed or not.

@Joseph Tham Because you can gain more interest in research from which you can better yourself, being respected/loved.

On the other side, if you're afraid, there's a risk to lose interest in research, which isn't needed. So, being loved is 100 time better than being feared.

Joseph Tham Mostly it is common to be love in the research world, and my little experience also corresponding with this hypothesis.

I think love wins all the time. As a researcher, you need an environment of love of those around you, or at least respect rather than hate, resentment and negativity. I think fear creates an unhealthy atmosphere and holds you back with your productivity. I’ve been through it all, so this is based on a personal experience. Most important to know that, it will never be only love or fear, it’s usually both with one prevailing at some time or another.

If you are doing research sincerely and effectively to reach positive goals, at times some people can fear you, because you abilities looks supernatural. As example, first presentation of electricity could frighten people.

If your research are proved to be helpful for people, they could be grateful to you.

Neither appears better. Why a scientist prefers either to be feared or loved. To be loved get married or give birth. There is no logic behind being feared.

A creative scientist loves what they are doing and fears nothing.

Interesting question. My instinct is to say the neither emotion is directly or solely connected to research productivity although both can contribute. I find self motivated passion (the non- amorous kind) for the subject drives research interest and persistence that can lead to productivity. External validation in the form of support sure helps! Fear in the long run is a negative though in the short run it can stimulate.

Not sure about the relationship. We do not research to become famous or loved by others. We aim to help in the advancement of knowledge and the profession.

Thank you for your excellent question. I think If researchers are biased in their attitudes, how can we trust their results or what they report? In research, we must get away from emotions, and be after the truth; otherwise, it is not research. Yes, there are hidden agenda, but I think a research publication is open to the whole research community worldwide to judge, not a particular group, close friends, or people that link with you.

I would like to add to my answer- Many times while we review a paper from (if the review process is not blinded), we notice that the authors did not cite several papers on the same topic that were from their institute or department and were not cited. We state this to the authors and take this matter into consideration for authors to fix, and show how their work adds to what already known. Therefore, editors and reviewers have a responsibility to look into such bias/ or problems in citations and acknowledging other work in the literature.

We need both, we should love what we do and be afraid of what ill equipped research would lead to.

I think that this is a false dichotomy. By the 1940's Neils Bohr, was the revered sage, the respected grandfather figure in nuclear physics. At that point he paid a visit to Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.

Everyone wanted his opinion. But he was intrigued by a figuratively "snotty-nosed young kid" at the back of the room by the name of Richard Feynman, who kept asking questions, looking for reasoning and evidence, rather than just accepting what Bohr had said. Bohr was in the position of power, yet he was interested by someone who expected his ideas to speak for themselves. This kind of turns the question on it's side.

A more interesting pairing would be whether it is more important to be respected than loved. To me, even this is still a false dichotomy as I know people who push me to greater heights, who are the most loving people on this planet.

J. Ryan Nielson Thank you for your great post. Since i am partial to Feynman, i really enjoyed your post. However, Feynman was exceptional. Very few like him. One has to earn respect. No sure if we can earn love, if it is meant to be unconditional.

Love - there is no sense of fear anytime (from the theistic/holistic point of view) From the materialistic point of view, fear might be better because fear enforces might- and manipulation -power, two things that are seen as important from the god-averted point of view because in this mind-set people need to harvest energy (like attention) from others.

It is better to be loved, respected, trusted, and recognized.

In my opinion, the scientist should be above all respected. However, whether he should be loved or other feelings, relationships, etc. depends on what role the scientist also plays and with whom. If the scientist is also a teacher at school and acts as a mentor, guide in the research group, these are different relationships, and therefore there can be different feelings in these different interpersonal relationships in addition to respect.

My view on this is that a scientist should not be Feared but Loved. He is supposed to give Guidance and being seen as Figure head in scientific work by the upcoming or early career researchers......

Dear, Joseph Tham what a most suggestive question .... I prefer to be loved for the answers and solutions applied to context problems. The researcher needs this recognition, without falling into the excessive desire to accumulate power and conceptual authority ... knowledge is dynamic and reality is changing. the researcher must be aware that it will contribute, but other researchers will also.

Dear Joseph Tham being feared is way easier to achieve than being loved. Everyone has fear but difficult to find love, respect, truth to create positive Viber, but as a researcher the passionate for their love, what we do people can easier can do well from belief.

Maybe if you are really tough and strict, and your juniors fear you, then the average productivity in your department can increase. i don't know. this is an empirical question that requires research. Sometimes, this approach is confusing because they call it "tough love" rather than fear. Remember, the ultimate goal is to increase the productivity. being nice may not work. again, it depends on the culture and empirical evidence. Are you a good task master?

Long time ago, in primary school, my teachers were very tough. We were afraid of them, and if we complained to our parents, it did not help either. sure times have changed but fear did work at that time. How come fear no longer works? What values have changed?

It is better to be loved. Being loved will bring people closer to you for mentorship and other professional engagements. Being loved enable others see more value in you and accord you respect and recognition but it is important not to compromise.

As a scientist all you need is to be respected, otherwise, nobody will love you, and depending on your field, fear might bring you about extremist anti-scientific attention.
