This is the query which would have troubled you at some point of your life, or is it still troubling? Your heart desires to chase your passion, but your mind restricts you to your profession. Is there any means through which both can be met? Why not make our passion, our profession?
It would be ideal to select a profession , in which you can chase your passion . I like teaching & doing research & I became a doctor , in which I could do both , besides treating patients , which I also enjoy . A profession is needed for earning an income , but would be stressful , if you do no like it .
It is a very interesting question but I do not find any controversy in it. In my very long life (92 yr), intellectual and professional, I can say I had fulfilled both of my desires: practicing and teaching in Medicine, and studying in archives and writing in History.
1. I never had any hesitation in my life orientations since I was born in an old medical family, which begun with my great-grand father, Vienna and Prague MD DS Stefan Nedok (1828-1878), and I think I was a good doctor and a teacher (1953-1990) of our medical science,
2. After retiring, since I choose not to continue with my personal cardiology practice due to circumstances my native country Serbia fell, I went to an other part of my intellectual long-life streaming, History of Serbian Medicine. The results could be found in my written books (8), and articles (more than 20) covering the field of Serbian Military Medicine in wars (1876-78, 1885, 1912/13, 1914/18)) and peace (XIX and early XX century).
And I am still writing.
