I may want to know the characterisation of the next geologic/lithologic units that occur as I progress vertically( or laterally) along a given geostratigraphic column....yes, I can manage to do this by generating a predictive model of the geologic logs of the geostratigraphic successions as a stationary markov chain process, and also by using existing log data of past drilling undertaken in the locality,to model the same sequence, as a probabilistic predictive analytics, using the hidden markov models, in either baum-welch or Viterbi algorithms packages in R and in python codes
