Are we biased towards the hydro-geological settings (that potentially decides the transport of pollutants)
than
the socioeconomic conditions and the anthropogenic activities (that potentially release the pollutants)?
Well,
Pollution study should take the potential impact from all sources, where the groundwater sources of pollutants are either geogenic (like arsenic pollutant)or anthropogenic (human sources).

In the case of geo-genic pollution, the pollutants mostly emanate from the geo-chemical characteristics of the aquifer; and obviously, it is relatively easier to consider aspects such as (a) dissolution of pollutants from the rock-matrix during the rock-water interaction; (b) redox condition that persists within the aquifer; and (c) the groundwater flow congestion. Thus, all the above cases naturally become a part of the hydrogeological setting; and subsequently, the forecast made is reasonable and meaningful.
However, the groundwater quality deterioration resulting from human activities (anthropogenic), particularly, from municipal, industrial and agricultural wastes remain always disconnected from the respective hydro-geoelogical setting and generally, the forecast in such system involves too many (simplified) assumptions either due to lack of proper data or due to the insufficient technical knowledge in establishing the connectivity between the aquifer and the source of pollutants.
Of course, we always look for inverse techniques to resolve such issues.
