Are university advisers obligatory or optional? Do you use them in your institution and if yes, are students satisfied with their answers and guidelines? Can somebody provide me a useful link which will illustrate the situation regarding this matter on an European or US level? What is their approximate salary? If your university / faculty does not have advisers, do you think that it will be helpful to have them?

I think University advisers are necessary especially for international students who are not abroad and need to liaise with them for organizing their enrollment. I came with a lot of expectations to my host country after given the assurance that the campus caters to international students from over 100 countries. However, the curriculum remained almost a 100% host country at that time in 2004, and I felt very invisible in the classroom, not to mention the amount of reading I had to do to close my host-country education knowledge gap. I felt like the advice I was given was not accurate, so advisers to international students need to familiarize themselves with what actually happens in the classroom and not just give information from a brochure. The attached article gives an idea of what it feels like to be "invisible" in the classroom after paying almost three times the tuition cost of a local student for your education.
