I am interested in papers and articles that discuss the possibility of using samples of diameter between 25 and 50 mm in Uniaxial compression tests in order to calculate the deformation modulus (E) of an intact rock. L/D>2 is respected. Does anyone have good suggestions? Cheers, Danilo.

The typical size of rock specimens in rock mechanics testing is NX
size (about 2 in. in diameter by 4 in. in length) However, test results with NX size
specimens do not always guarantee proper representation of field conditions. Thus,
smaller or larger specimen sizes can sometimes be used according to the test objective,
the sample state and size effect of the rock samples.

The calculation of the deformation modulus by uniaxial compression tests is a standard procedure in rock mechanics. But you have to consider joints, faults or other structural features of your rock, which can influence the deformation behavior of you rock. The bigger your sample the more representative it will be for your rock mass so I would prefer 50 mm samples.
I will perform triaxial tests on samples with 50 mm in diameter from cores of 100 mm in diameter. I chose the 50 mm due to size restrictions of our triaxial cell. But I want to try tests with 100 mm in diameter, too.

I agree with Christian that the selection of sample size should consider joints and faults usually found in the rock layers, any size which respect the slenderness ratio of 1-2 would be suitable for compressive strength determination.
