Traditional cities are center of art and culture of any country. They are significant for sense of place and sociability. How traditional cities are important from their social sustainability aspects.
Tradition, is not only a product of change but can comfortably coexist with adaptation to change. Modern life does not preclude tradition. Indeed, the great changes we are experiencing seem, rather, to demand it. In this case, traditional cities are more socially sustainable in comparison to modern cities?.
Traditional cities are relatively unplanned - they naturally emerged simply by people colonizing and building close together. There plans are more guided by climate and culture rather than technology governed.
To me, in term of Heritage or Old Cities, they are unique and tangible to pro-active on sustainable while on sustainability approach for new towns, we would only forecast how they could be sustain based on current factors, we actually yet to know any of future factors involving.
Hi, I read once an article about Joseph Needham, I cannot find the reference sorry. his main book is Science and Civilisation in China where he introduces the concept of “homeosthasis“ taken from the biology language: they compared the term to the modern “sustainable”. It seems that Chinese societies but also Egyptian and Cambodian have left behind examples of self sustaining cities with energy dissipation equal to 0. Now I am not an expert but the article clearly demonstrated that these cities (classified as hydraulic cities) where actually sustainable. (Think one angkorian cory was inhabited by 2 million people so it is not a matter of scale). it was long time ago and the social structure was different from ours.
