I am wondering about how best to estimate premorbid cognitive ability or intelligence across languages specifically in order to compare cognitive performance after survival of acute illnesses (e.g. sepsis, cardiac surgery, etc.), and, more importantly, how to utilize such scores to compare short- and long-term cognitive outcomes. This is key in long-term cognitive research of acute illnesses of various types that requires a lot of thought and as I understand it, there is no consensus. In such illnesses we generally never have access to a true "premorbid" score. In addition, for international studies, this has to hold across languages and cultures. Suggestions?
