Pathogenicity deals with the ability (including genetic) of pathogens to harm their host. But why (and unlike non opportunistic pathogens) should opportunistic microbes have to wait for a faulty immune system before they can harm their host when they already have the inherent capacity to do so? Are there studies on how 'sleeping genes in opportunistic pathogens' been awoken by the immunosuppressed states the find themselves? is it really a situation of the powerless state of the human immune system making this opportunistic pathogen showing up?
