In considering punishment the concept of procedural efficacy provides a context to its use in regards to behavioural change. 

1. Speed and degree of effect within episode and over time. 

2. Durability

3. Generalisation 

4. Side effects

5. Social validity

6. Empirical validity

Punishment has been documented to be effective on the frequency of behaviour overtime. However little evidence exists upon its effectiveness within episode.The small number of published studies indicate that punishment is not effective within episode and increases the likelihood of type I and II escalations in the behaviour being punished.

The studies that have considered the durability of punishment are also limited but indicate that the response suppression of the target behaviour does not maintain overtime and returns to baseline levels.

Generalisation studies on  the target behaviour indicate punishment has poor generalisation. That is while the behaviour is suppressed in the punishment condition it does not generalise outside of this condition.

Punishment has been noted to cause a number of  side effects one of which is punishment elicited aggression. 

Social validity - surveys of clinicians or staff tasked with using punishment to modify behaviour have found that clinicians and staff had strong views against the practice and that the practice had a negative effect on them.

Empirical Validity - a substantial number of publications exist on the application of punishment to modify behaviour. However a great body of publications exist on the use of non aversive approaches to modify behaviour. Punishment is by its use is intended to have a future effect on the behaviour. This them limits its utility as parents are using punishment in an attempt to reduce the episodic severity of the Childs behaviour in which the punishment is likely to increase the episodic severity (see my paper on research gate).
