Classically sex determination in fish (non-lethal or non-invasive) has been based on the sexual dimorphism during the sexually mature stages or in a spawning season. Sex determination of young stages is essential for achieving controlled breeding or manupulated spawning of difficult species.
Is any one aware of PCR-based or molecular methods which are optimized (can be optimized?) for application in juvenile fish?
Of course it will be species specific because there are a range of sex determining genes in fishes. There are several key papers by Conover and a review by Devlin &Mahayana 2002.
