XFEM has really become a very important generalization of classical finite element technique to decrease the disadvantages of mesh-dependencies of the solutions by establishing mesh-Iindependent generalizations of classical FEM.The application of XFEM for crack simulations should improve the modelling of crack-tip surroundings also for advaced integral fracture criteria as generalized J etc.

XFEM allows simulation of initiation and propagation of a
crack along an arbitrary path without the requirement of remeshing.
I suggest XFEM for fracture analysis of materials while we need the stress analysis as well.
otherwise, for just prediction of the path of the fracture propagation, I suggest Discrete Element Modeling (DEM).
I simulated soil, rock, and concrete with both of these methods. convergence problem still is challenging in XFEM and it requires re-meshing.
Note that soil, rock, and concrete have discontinuous nature, I am not sure for composite material DEM works.
Just want to share, I realized the limitation of XFEM in ABAQUS/ Standard software in which the asymptotic crack tip field cannot update properly the residual stress field during crack propagate on the material surface.
