A "stinger" or a "burner" is a brachial plexus injury that results from downward displacement of the shoulder with concomitant lateral flexion of the neck towards the contralateral shoulder which can pinch nerves exiting the cervical spine leading to a transient tingling, burning, or numbing sensations down the athlete's arm. Such a movement can occur when an athlete is attempting to tackle a player of an opposing team in contact sports such as American football or rugby, for example. My question is whether or not GP's or Sports Medicine physicians have noticed long-term effects of repeated "stingers" that occurred during competitive contact sports.
