I am collecting examples of highly unpleasant sounds that cause an adverse physiological reaction when heard; I call these Auditory Noxious Events. Two such examples are (1) the sound made by a fork held at 90 degrees to a plate and then scraping the fork hard across the plate, and (2) the sound of chalk squeaking across a blackboard. Does anyone have other examples of this phenomenon?
