Dear Sir. Regarding your issue about ICP-MS communication error. First try cleaning the interface and the torch cower from the  dust (if any). Clean these parts with a clean cloth and then with Ar gas. After that, check the proper contact of the sensors' connectors (behind the torch box). Although the ELAN did not start properly at first, reset the entire system (along with the PC) and it will started normally. So far, there is no problem.

That sound is terrible! I would guess it is a fan or other sort of mechanical device that is breaking down. My first thought is a bearing or something has worn out and an axle is now grinding on solid material. Can you call in a service technician or on-site engineer to investigate?

Thank you Matthew! I will follow your suggestion. The sound has, however, ceased and I am wondering what might have happened. It has only been on for four days.

If the sound has gone away, I would be even more convinced of it being a fan, as they can sometimes come and go before finally breaking down. If you consider how much a repair costs vs purchasing a whole new unit (of whatever is being noisy), I wouldnt put off calling in a service engineer.
