In the study, the investigators used a virtual environment to test memory for object location under two situations: one that involved movement of the subject between encoding and retrieval and the other that did not. The testing was done in a patient with localized bilateral hippocampal damage and the authors conclude that this test may provide "a well-controlled test that is extremely sensitive to hippocampal pathology" and that that "it might detect much milder hippocampal pathology, such as that shown early in Alzheimer’s disease or preterm children."
