Cited references we can say are the main motivation that an author takes in preparing the current article. These cited references carry important information regarding establishing connection between the article and the subject domain of the article. Many people generally want to claim about the presence of this interconnection. I want to now is there any such research papers available which establishes this fact that the cited references can be an useful tool in establishing connection between an article and a subject area?
I think that the reason no-one has tried to answer your question is that you want to look in the wrong place (research papers), when the answer lies in textbooks on research. Nobody is researching what is common knowledge in the textbooks.
Questions you can ask are:
Is it tradition to always cite papers with a connection to your research question? The answer is simply, Yes.
Does anybody propose an alternative model?
The answer is Yes, but their papers are rejected by publishers for non-conformance!
Could someone be so brilliant that he/she comes up with a method or result without depending on prior art? No. Even Einstein relied e.g., on Newton.
So, only if the writer is a plagiarist will the writer come up with methods and results that have no precedent. Publishers who insist on a review of prior art are correct, because otherwise the writer is a plagiarist.
Almost all textbooks on research will emphasise the need to start with a review of the literature to show where you stand, and to identify prior art, thereby avoiding re-inventing the wheel.
When I review a research paper, I check whether all the references are relevant to the subject of the paper. I usually delete the irrelevant references to ensure that all the references in some way or other are related to the subject. I feel all sincere researchers do this.
References are useful in connecting the article and subject. Because research is carried out by studying the related papers- reviewing related literature. Cited papers are mostly on the same subject. So there should be a definite subject relationship between citing and cited documents.
This concept is useful in searching literature, too. If you find an appropriate and relevant paper on the subject you are dealing with you can find many more papers or books by using the reference list of the one you used for.
Scientific research is carried out by considering the scientific contribution of the past researches on a particular discipline. Do search papers on Journal of Scientometrics
