The migratory patterns of Rhincodon typus is very interesting to me and I have read that satellite tagging is the method typically used when tracking their movements. However, I would like to know if there is any other alternative of tracking that is just as efficient.
It is becoming an accepted practice to examine parasites as a marker for long distance migrations. As for whale sharks, Alessandro Ponzo (I think he is on researchgate) is studying long distance migrations of the species using parasites. His work was featured on Discovery Chanel's Shark Week last year (link below). I hope this helps.

Another alternative might be to use a individual identification through photography, as is done with dolphin and manta ray. By establishing a network of cooperative dive charter companies, you may be able to use pattern recognition software to identify distinct spot, scar or belly pigment patterns through photographs posted on a common web page. This would also be relatively inexpensive.
