I am a 40 year old hematologist from Egypt. After spending about 10 years in study and practice, I am beginning to see more meaning and value in basic or clinical research. I started applying for PhD programs related to stem cell research in the US and Germany about a year ago after I had my Masters degree in hematology, but haven't succeeded yet. I am beginning to think that it's my age that is not in favor of my future endeavors. Should I quit pursuing my dream, or there are opportunities that are suitable for me somewhere else? Thanks.
Amr, to answer simply: never give up! If you can dream it, then you can achieve it :)
To answer in a more complex fashion: PhD positions are funded based on PI's ability to bring in more (and bigger) extramural grants. The major funding agencies' ability to fund research is more and more scarce and priority will be given to funding existing teams. That is to first allow productivity continuity and then ensure guaranteed expertise. Hence, you will see fewer entry-level positions. For the few made available, likely there is already an existing pipeline of qualified candidates that will surely minimize your chances (but NOT cancel them out).
I would suggest clinical and translational science programs in which you will have a net advantage having already a clinical degree. Potentially you may be advantaged to apply through existing partnership programs with local universities. If you target US programs, be prepared to study hard and score really-really high on your GRE and TOEFL tests. As a cheat-sheet, look up online to check what universities have currently good funding WITHOUT being very famous - this will maximize your chance. Explore places that have an institution mission and vision focusing on clinical and translational research, maybe with emphasis on hematology. Last, not least, get yourself in the pipeline of medical board exam taking. Coming in any PhD program with a passed medical board exam will give you big value and make you attractive for research hospitals that would need your talent in the team while you are pursuing your degree.
