Reporting to stakeholders can be done in many different ways, including meetings with stakeholders, letters describing the organization's activities related to social

responsibility for a defined period, website information and periodic social responsibility reports.

Should include information about the organization objectives and performance on the core subjects and relevant issues of social responsibility and describe how and when stakeholders have been involved in the organization's reporting on social responsibility.

A fair and complete picture of the organization performance related to stakeholders should be provided including achievements and shortfalls and the ways in which the shortfalls will be addressed.

I would suggest you look into the Global Report Initiative (GRI) frameworks:

A more complex approach might be to use a model like Down Jones Sustainability Index:

If you are familiar with ISO Standards ISO 26000 - Guidance on social responsibility, can also be interesting to you as it also contains a detailed list of existing models and schemes( please send an email in case you want this: [email protected]).

In addition to the monitoring of the KPIs, definition of targets and actions to achieve them would be useful.  

For supporting stakeholders in the generation/selection of the KPIs that best fit their needs, the consideration of facility of monitoring and implementation of actions versus the impact relevance, might be considered.

Regarding to determination of KPI, I had research for performance measurement in SCM and also risk identification for logistics. There is no specific method to identify all the indicators and fit them for the company. The best approach is determination of company type and then surveying the factors for them based on their processes. This can be done by the expert systems.

thanks for your replies.

Knowing what KPIs/standards are used to measure sustainability is a very valuable input! Nevertheless I am specifically interested in the step just behind, which is the selection of the KPIs worth to be analyzed by stakeholders among the numerous KPIs potentially usable. In particular, I wondered about the existence of some sort of methodology which guide stakeholders in the process of matching the socio-technical system's behavior with the selection of KPIs suitable to measure its performances.

Hamidreza, if there are studies which show the application of expert systems for such a purpose I would be grateful if you can sent me some references. If not, any reference on expert systems on how to survey process factors (as you mentioned) is most welcome!

Another approach to to reporting key performance indicators to stakeholders is to ask the question: What is the value proposition of this organization for this stakeholder?  This question will provide multiple answers, but the areas of overlap should enable you to identify meaningful KPIs for reporting to stakeholders.  The answers to the question of value also may surface inherent conflicts among the organization's stakeholders, bringing into play how strategic options may engender both 

I think that today, it is important not to develop specific KPIs for reporting to stakeholders but all KPIs must integrate sustainability. That is why we developp KPSI (key performance sustainability indicators), and especially linked to the concept of extended value chain. But our studies are only beginning. A mooc is planned in march 2016.

Both components - conceptual component, and the measures for selection of  KPIs have been wonderfully advised by elite respondents to the question. 

I presume sustainability itself has a wide ranging disparation in the imperatives sought, and thus necessitates all KPI's chosen must in in sync with the sought objectives.

Béatrice advises to a possible integration of various types - through a mathematical summation, or a collective mapping, for which a mechanism for advising like that of a dashboard will be in order.

My research is concerned with the selection and development of KPIs for the wastewater sector.

First, I identified gaps in the existing KPI groups and developed KPIs to fill these gaps, in order to ensure that you will have all the KPIs you need.

Secondly, as you rightly say, many companies select the wrong KPIs or too many KPIs, so to counteract this I developed a short excel-based toolkit, within which, the user selects the data which they currently have available (and most importantly which is accurate) and from this the toolkit matches these data sets to the KPIs I have and presents the user with KPIs which they can actually manage and calculate over time.
