The conservative federal government in Canada is going to dismantle the world-class, fishery libraries and discard archival materials. They have also cut federal funding for research, muzzled government scientists, and refuted scientific evidence on climate change, to name a few. Do right-wing governments pose a threat to science, asserting ideological agendas over scientific evidence?
It's likely to limit the range of the research, as private investment will probably prefer profit over general interest. Of course, there is philanthropy but not enough to compensate. The irony is that areas suffering most from cuts of public funding are those attracting least private funding, because non-lucrative. Would be interesting to see comparison between countries.
Crowdfunded research? Probably too long-term and abstract to attract citizen support. Besides, it would mean edging towards reinventing tax.
Re ideology and the crisis/'need for cuts', it's a chicken and egg situation, as
the 'crisis' is largely ideologically induced but that's another debate...
