Prions does not respond to our usual biological laws. For example, their exponential way of reproduction 1 prion+1 prion= 4 prions. They are almost undestructible. As far they first showed up in England in sheep (and we can be sure it was the first time, due to the contaminant nature of the diseases it propagates) during 17th century, almost at the same time Halley comet visited our skies, I was wondering if it could be possible that outlaw, the prion, may have come from outside Earth or even outside solar system.
The first misfolds may have been generated by radiation or chemicals, but I would not say they are of cometary origin. The misfolds can occur anywhere, anytime. You would have to show that subsequent visits of the comet are correlated with fresh outbreaks of related diseases.
The progressive growth of prions is to be regarded a sign that "unconventional" reproduction is taking place. Rather model their propagation as being cancer-like.
The reason prions are "difficult to kill" is because they are not susceptible to techniques that work elsewhere on microbes or viruses, such as chemicals or immunisation.

I do not think that it is a good way to explain why prions are so "strange". Considering that every "weird things" come from space (like life) move the problem but doesn't explain anything on their origin. It is a way to refuse to work hard to find the solution :-)
It's been more than 20 years since mad cow disease broke in. Since then, not a single discovery. I know how meat industries managed to discourage any research around prions, by cutting budgets in Europe: a criminal, mafia-type behavior that included blackmailing and family threatening, if the researcher intended to resist. In the USA, it was even worst: see Gadjusek, that demonstrated prions could stay contaminant 3 years buried in the ground. The fertilizer industry was prompt to react: he was accused of pedophilia for facts occurred in Papuasia 40 years before, his lab and research destroyed, send to jail and only authorized to go back to Slovaquia to die. Maybe prions should be taken to ISS to see how they react to outer space. But maybe it's too dangerous (remember they can't be destroyed).

Gajdusek demonstrated they could stay contaminant 3 years in the soils, what upset the fertilizer industry. But it's a main industrial challenge be sure to recycle all of the bones of the animals we eat.If not, meat would turn into high-luxury product (producing 70% waste). So meat industries have a strong interest in keeping prion research low-level. "Après moi le déluge".
