Are physical activity questionnaires like Minnesota Physical Activity Questionnaire and 7-Day Recall Test by Sallis comparable? Could they be used interchangeably?
You can never use two questionnaires interchangeable but you can give them simultaneously and you yourself compute their correlation. They can complement each other but in good research it is not a good idea to change from one instrument to another in the middle of the process. It is like in my vasectomy paper when all of a sudden the surgery was change from a conventional method to another,
Agreed, if you are seeking to detect change then the use of different measures is not recommended, even if the measures are ostensibly designed to detect the same behaviour over the same time period. The use of self-report measures is sufficiently fraught with fidelity issues as it is, without adding further potential for criticism of your method and measurement protocol. If you were wanting more detailed recommendations regarding the use of particular measures you will have to give further details of your research question and design.
Anyway, the instrument cannot be used interchangeablely. Sometimes, even the inistruments have been validated before, they may also need to be tested in your sample, i.e. do a pilot study to test the psychometric profile in your specific sample.
I agree It is impossible to use these questionnaires interchangeable. What I see however as a possibility based on the validity reports of these questionnaires is that when these questionnaires aim to measure the same concept it might be possible to categorize the answers in for example high mid and low and see how much these categories overlap. When that is known you might obtain valuable information from the two questionnaires.
