Phthalates are characterized ,in general, by low solubility in water & high solubility in fats. Speaking about a specific phthalate (DOP); this compound is soluble in ethanol, ether, and mineral oil but nearly insoluble in water. I think any of the mentioned solvents (or better ethanol/ether mixture) will be suitable for biodegradation study. My regards.
The answer provided by Nizar is correct. If you are concerned how the solvent will impact your bacteria, due a small experiment where the solvent is the sole carbon source. Track the bacteria numbers and disappearance of the solvent -- this will give you an idea of how much the solvent will be used as an auxiliary source. If the solvent level does not decrease but the bacteria activity decreases, it will let you know if it is toxic to your specific bacteria.
