I would like to open a constructive discussion regarding MDPI and similar open-access publishers, especially in relation to their article processing charges (APCs) and peer-review integrity.
From my perspective, the APCs requested by MDPI are unjustifiably high. As researchers, we are responsible for:
In contrast, the publisher provides limited infrastructure—such as journal websites, production teams, and shared editorial staff—across multiple journals. This raises the question: Do the APCs reflect the actual cost of publication? Or are they inflated beyond the value provided?
Additionally, I had a recent experience that raised serious concerns about peer-review transparency. I reviewed a manuscript for an MDPI journal and recommended major revisions. Surprisingly, the manuscript was accepted on the same day, with no visible changes or delay. This gave the impression that the peer-review process might have been disregarded or reduced to a mere formality.
These issues—cost-effectiveness and editorial standards—are critical for the credibility of open-access publishing. I would appreciate hearing others’ experiences and insights. Have you encountered similar situations with MDPI or other OA publishers?
