It is usually easier to study other, similar studies rather than using the standards as guides. I have met a number of people who only get more confused when trying to use the standards as textbook.

Hmm, i'm not sure how to read your answer, but from experience, ISO standards have NOT been useful as a way to learn LCA. Looking at other studies, or reading proper textbooks are better.

For LCA I recommend 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to LCA' (Henrikke Baumann and Anne-Marie Tillman). Is a good reference to learn the LCA.

Reading this discussion, I have the feeling that the question of Ahmed has not been answered yet. One of the easiest ways to calculate CO2 (equivalent) emissions of a building is to use the data in the excel tables which an be found at www.ecocostsvalue.com tab data. The tables contain the kg CO2 euqivalent of materials from cradle to gate, applying LCIs from Ecoinvent and Idemat, calculated by Simapro. For the use phase data for electricity, oil and gas are given as well. the way how to make these "fast track LCA" calculations is explained at the same website

Well, if one does not know how to put together a CO2 calculation, it is not that much easier to pick and mix from a database - that's what I see from teaching LCA - which is why looking at old, similar studies are helpful. Based on that, there is a structure that can be filled with appropriate data.

We have developed a book "a practical giude to LCA" (http://www.amazon.com/Lca-practical-students-designers-business/dp/9065622535/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1386167075&sr=1-3&keywords=vogtlander) which is simpeler that the Hitchhikers LCA book, and work well for our students. It is written in an easy way, avoiding jargon, whith a lot of simple examples. It is stricktly in line with the LCA manual of the ILCD, so there is no conflict or confusion when student digg deeper.

LCA on buildings are done the same way as LCA on other objects. For examples on buildings, see www.winket.com. LCA is a caculation method for CO2 emissions. However, it is a spreadsheet type of calculation, which requires modelling of your specific problem first. So it is not a calculation in the form of a simple mathematical formula.

For the use phase you need to calculate the energy losses first. This is also a matter of modeling the building. Type "heat loss from buildings calculations" in Google, and you will find a lot of usefull documents.

As some others have stated, the ISO guidelines can be somewhat limiting in providing concrete knowledge of how an LCA works. It provides the general definitions and structure to what an LCA study should be, but it doesn't provide a deep enough description of the inventory analysis or impact assessment. Those topics are discussed in great detail in the literature. For the impact assessments, reading the literature on ReCiPe, TRACI, USEtox, etc will provide good insight and references to follow up on. For the inventory, reading through Ecoinvents documentation of how they calculated their inventory items gives you a good idea of information you would want to gather and how to manage this data when creating your own inventory.
