In our discipline (chemistry), annual meetings of the American Chemical Society (ACS) used to be mega-events with up to 20,000 participants. The current one will be virtual, and the organizers praise that the participants can enjoy the meeting "in the comfort of their homes" (see attached). Is this the first sign that big international conferences as we know them from pre-corona times are dying out?

Possibly until the pandemic is under control. A virtual conference will not offer the same excitement resultant from the peoples' networks in vivo.
It may not die, but surely this pandemic affected its "immunity". Possibly, it will re-establish the enthusiasm after pandemic.
The majority of conferences scheme is to present actually finished work/paper to be published in conference proceedings or journal after a conference instead of discussing and propose something new. The people give their questions, but the paper is actually reviewed and sometimes even published. My idea is to come to a conference which offers the opportunity to discuss and plan questionnaire, experiment, to discuss goals and planned method find co-workers from abroad, or at least establish to teams which can compare their results next conference.
Dear All, when the corona pandemic will be over some day, my personal fear is the following: The institutions / universities / employers could say: Why do do want to attend a conference face-to-face or do a business trip when everything can be done online? Why do you want to book a long distance flight, when you can attend a videoconference? There is no need to provide you with any more travel money. Do you also think that this will happen?
