Should the corresponding author(s) of an article respond to all enquiries to the e-mail address provided, even to say they don't know the answer?
What are the alternatives if the corresponding author(s) are unresponsive, or the e-mail address no longer valid.
Does the publishing journal have a role in helping to find answers to questions about the research they publish?
The first author and the corresponding author both have the rights to response to inquiries and make necessary changes, either of their response will work.
Interesting question. I wouldn't think that they are obliged to answer all queries.
If you have a query about the validity of the research, contacting the corresponding author would be the best first approach. If you don't get a response you could try a letter to the editor, or eventually your own research paper if you are working on a similar topic and want to critically analyze their work.
