There are many article options nowadays - primary research, literature review, mini review, commentaries, opinions, case reports, letters to editor and the list adds on.
Are commentaries and opinions valuable for a researcher?
Agreed Justin! I personally believe that all peer reviewed articles have some contribution to the advancement of the scientific community to some extent.
To me they are very valuable as they move the direction forward on topics that may be controversial. More so for commentaries. I find them sort of like a narrative review article, where we just have to be cautious and aware of potential bias, but it helps to have one article summarize some of the literature on a topic and provide some valuable input on an issue. I think it is particularly useful for presenting new methodologies or maybe questioning older ones. Just my opinion though!
