SPSS is a paid software. However, you could opt for using PSPP if your goal is to carryout data analysis for free. I have published two articles in journals by SAGE and Taylor and Francis where I have used this software.

There are a number of free programs available for path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM) in case you don't want to purchase AMOS:

OpenMx and Onyx allow you to generate models from a graphical user interface (by specifying path diagrams) in much the same way as in AMOS.
