I'm studying elephant-human interaction, focusing on Sri Lanka at the moment. I am very familir with the work in South AFrica on using contraception to help "control" elephants numbers, and I am puzzled why I don't see it being used in Sri Lanka, given the burgeoning numbers of both human and elephants, and the complex challenges.
I wonder if there are religious or cultural reasons, for example, or whether its something that coupld be considered. As both elephants and humans die every year as either direct or indirect consequences of the bugeoning numbers it seems worth considering, even if the habitat is tricky. I'd be very appreicative of responses for anyone involved and knowledeagble. Thanks,
Paulina
