I would guess that it might react and even form the dimer but doubt that it will give you the demanded spectrophotometric properties ( regarding absorbance wavelength and molar absorption coefficient). So, you might end up with a lot of extra work - I would try to get TBA instead.

Thanks, I try to get the TBA but without success ... I just doubt the molar absorption coefficient, but I will have no option but to try.

Francisco - Did you ever do the experiment?  Did MDA react with barbiturate?  Was the resulting species colored?
