I want to deposit Gold using e beam first and on top of it, I want to deposit silver by e beam evaporation. Do I need any adhesion layer in between these or it should stick with each other without any adhesion?
Gold and silver are very compatible: Mixtures form a solid solution. Adhesion will be excellent. Not breakting the vacuum between depositions definitely helps, but in case of gold and silver it might even work when the sample is exposed to air inbetween because of the low chemical affinity of silver and gold towards water and oxygen.
If you have multiple evaporation sources, i.e. if you can deposit Au first and then Ag without having to break vacuum, the adhesion of silver to gold should be pretty good.
You might need an adhesion layer below the Au though, depending on your substrate.
Also, depending on the application, you could deposit a thin layer of e.g. SiO2 or Al2O3 for added durability, since the silver surface is quite soft and easily scratched.
