For making alloy of Cu,Co and Ni through vaccum arc melting, i am using shots of about 1.2 cm size, so before melting what type of cleaning is required before meting for cu shots, Co shots and Ni shots?
You can use an acid bath (HNO3 diluted in desioniced water). We use a pyrex tube with three holes in the bottom, that allows to interrump the process if the acid bath is very strong putting the pyrex tube in water.
I think you don't need to have any special cleaning unless you picked them up from garbage cane, then you can use HNO3 diluted in desioniced water as recommended by Dr. Gallardo. Normally copper might have some oxide surface layer but this doesn't matter it will break down during arc melting if you apply few high voltage shock pulls initially.
