Anyone experienced Character recognization with machine learning in python?

When I learned Image processing, using some direct algorithm image pixel comparison and that pretty straight forward task I followed to identify image.

But now I want that I give set of 15 different types of character "a" and my machine learn from it and then identify if any other shape of 'a' comes.

Can any one help me please?
