Aminopropyl silane has been grafted through conventional method using dry boiling toluene. Material (powder) has been kept in closed cap containers. Could it be the source? though the aminosilane was not very old and still clear. The N-O reflection in xps is as strong as other N1s reflection (due to N-H's)
Are you sure that the sample is not charging? I mean the differential charging, when some peaks remain in standard positions, while the charged surface particles produce strnage peaks shifted in energy.
I agree with Saulius. If the amino group is protonated, i.e., NH4+ vs an unprotonated amine (NH3) you will see a shift in binding energy.
Unfortunately not done xps myself. however I see three peaks NH2 399 eV , protonated/H-bonded 401 eV and this third one which everywhere in literature so far attribute to nitro only !
