believe me or not (see my list of publications on heavy minerals and my project), routine XRD is by no means an adequate method to study heavy mineral suites. It starts off with petrographic microscopy where you can study the individual grains of sand-sized material, goes through electronmicroprobe analyses and may end up somewhere at an advanced level of micro-raman spectroscopy  I know that students trying to circumvent the problem of gathering knowledge and pratical experience by pouring their powdered samples into an analytical device. The essential heavy minerals escape such a routine treatment and the results are not satisfactory.

This is the piece of advice given by someone having been dealing with heavy minerals since 1976.
