I have had some luck with the USPTO database searching on "permafrost" but that will not lead, I think, to ship/boats/ etc. technologies. I think what I really need is to know what the classification numbers might be. Looked at the 2013 WIPO Indicators publication. I have not gone looking via the Intl Maritime Organization.
Since many of your "topics" are ship related, perhaps you are interested in icebreakers, icebreaking ships or vessels, etc? Ice capable could mean anything from refrigerators, roofs, tires, etc. Offshore in the arctic, one could also have ice capable fixed structures, which is one of my principal interests.
Yes, the broad ways that something could be ice capable was the problem when I looked at the database. Ice capable fixed structures in the Arctic would be a good category, but that, too, is a giant set of potential technologies. I'm working on a little paper where I've taken 5 'factors' that two energy experts used in a 2009 article to assess how likely it is the Arctic will get exploited as environmental change moves along. I'm looking at whether any of the factors are further along now than then. I thought the article's factors were general enough to cover lots in the Arctic and they were not specific to energy production. New technologies might also prove useful for adapting things for those who live there all the time. Stands to reason that technological adaptation to change would grow fast there. But it is hard to show that. Any suggestion are welcome. I have a former student who works North Slope, he's a field engineer. He's trying to help me think about it, too. But, I see you have a lot on this. I'm not an engineer. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Well, there's a thought...sort of like searching under permafrost. Might try snow machine, snowmobile. Makes me think I should go talk with our clean snowmobile challenge student group. Wonder how one traverses large expanses of melting permafrost. Not on a snow mobile, I'd guess. A hovercraft...
A hovercraft could work, but it's expensive and takes a lot of maintenance. If I remember correctly, the russians used to have a sledges driven by a propeller.
In what contest do you want to do the search? Is the structure from which exploration will be done, the drilling technologies, the safety aspect? Depending on the interest you will get very different answers. If you are talking about escape, evacuation and rescue technologies, and more specifically evacuation, then you can search under evacuation craft, ice strengthened lifeboat (ISL), Polar Haven, Arktos, fan boats, icebreaking evacuation craft, Archimedes screw, extreme environment evacuation craft. Also we may just look for next generation evacuation craft. ISO 19906 ch18 & A18 provide some guidance and the new ISO standard being developed focus exactly in onshore and offshore arctic technologies. Some Arctic projects have been cancelled, delayed or the type of structure modified due to safety concerns. Currently there isn't one silver bulled wrt escape, evacuation, survival and rescue technologies for Arctic operations.
Thanks for referring me to the iSO. I was looking for the kinds o indicator trends like you find in WIPO's Patent Indicators. They have a measure of the relative importance of countries in patents for alternative energy (example, fuel cell, wind). I was hoping perhaps there were "clumps" like that I could use. I'm doing a textbook on the Arctic in 21st century international relations (co-author, Rachael Lorna Johnstone) and I have the political economy chapter. It would be nice to say something about different kinds innovation going on. But, as all of you have illustrated, there are a lot of potential categories. I need the patent organization (category number) for such things, but I can see it will not work.
