I am a little stumped here. I have repeatedly got a persistent froth from a hexane extract. This is against every other reference I have seen. I need an explanation for this.
I dont think so. Saponins are polar types of compounds and they extracts into polar solvents viz. methanol, ethanol, water saturated butanol etc. You can see paper of saponins of our group. Hexane fraction is for fatt, waxes types of compounds. I dont know why it is froathing.
I agree with Dr. Joshi. In my experience, only ethanolic and purely aqueous extracts of plant materials will produce "frothing", which signifies the presence of saponins. I don't believe that the frothing you experienced with your hexane extract is due to saponins.
If you had started your extraction using either methanol or wter, then fractionate using methanol/water to see whether there is going to be much froth. If there is much froth,re-fractionate using hexane/water and purify with methanol/water.
