Hi folks,
I have recently started to dig into generalized additive models to analyze non-linear relationships. As the first application, I focus on modeling intensive longitudinal data. However, in some presentations, I saw applications to spatial data in terms of bivariate smooths (e.g., on longitude and latitude data). However, I have no real references and due to my complete lack of any knowledge on spatial data analysis, searching for papers or tutorials via google scholar does not really help me.
Hence, I hope this is not too cheap if I would like some recommendations with regard to overall non-technical introductions into spatial analysis as well as applications of GAMs on spatial data.

There has been many advances in the last years for spatially explicit models using GAM/GAMM's (e.g. adding barriers, spatial autocorrelation).
There is a short worked out example on Michael Clark's website on GAMs

Simon Wood's book: Generalized Additive Models: An Introduction with R (2nd edition - 2017) deals with the topic more in depth (I guess one could skip the mathy sections). The first edition of the book will not have this.
